Major Gift Donated for Equine Intensive Care Unit Renovations
Gerry and Faye Lane and John and Saundra Lane Garrett announced a gift of $50,000 to support construction of the new Equine Intensive Care Unit at the School of Veterinary Medicine. The proposed 10-stall facility will be constructed within an existing area of the equine hospital. The planned ICU will replace the current two-stall facility, which has gradually become less adequate with the recent dramatic increase in the number of critically ill and injured horses presented to LSU requiring ever more complex treatment.

Saundra Lane Garrett and Gerry Lane (l-r) learn how the equine ICU benefits neonatal foals from Dr. Dennis McCurnin, hospital director, Dr. Becky Adcock, development officer, and Dr. Lais Costa, equine internist and advisor for the LSU Foal Team.
Dr. Rustin Moore, chief of equine medicine and surgery, said, "The expansion of our current ICU facility is vital to provide state-of-the-art care for the ever increasing number of critically ill and injured horses. The horse industry in Louisiana is rapidly expanding and with it our case load has increased by 7-28% per year since 1990. LSU currently has on faculty five equine surgeons, three equine internists, three theriogenolo-gists, and two anesthesiologists, all board-certified specialists. This concentration of equine specialty expertise is unique in Louisiana and serves as the comprehensive center for referral of equine patients requiring management."
The Lane family gift was announced at EQUUS 21, a gathering of representatives from the school, from the equine industry, and Louisiana veterinarians, to discuss future development of the LSU Equine Health Studies Program. Dr. David Senior, head of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, recognized Saundra Lane Garrett for her family's remarkable and long-time leadership of horse activities in Louisiana, praised the Lane family for their vision, and thanked them for their extreme generosity.
Anyone interested in directly supporting the expansion of the Equine ICU facility should contact Dr. Rustin Moore, director of the Equine Health Studies Program at (225) 346-3131.
