VTH&C Educates Veterinary Students and Works Closely with Louisiana Veterinarians

As the name suggests, the primary function of the LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital and Clinics (VTH&C) is to train the veterinarians of tomorrow. Veterinary students spend the last 15 months of school in the hospital learning the art and science of veterinary medicine. All students rotate through equine medicine and surgery.
The hospital environment also allows training of graduate veterinarians as specialists in equine medicine and surgery.
Parallel to the instructional activities, the board-certified specialists at LSU allow the VTH&C to provide a high standard of primary care and referral services to the horse owners of Louisiana and surrounding states, who rely on the School for consultation and referral of challenging cases.
The large volume of clinical equine patients allows the faculty to advance our knowledge of veterinary care, including the discovery of new methods of diagnosis and treatment, the comparison of different treatments to improve effectiveness, and the discovery of new previously unrecognized diseases.
In the last five years, the equine faculty and graduate students have published 264 scientific articles in the world literature, which has contributed appreciably to the advancement of medical and surgical care of ill and injured equine patients.
