Awards and Honors

Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association Equine Committee Award -- The Equine Committee of the LVMA presents an award of $500 and a certificate of recognition to a Year IV student nominated by fellow students and selected by the equine faculty.  The award is based on clinical proficiency in equine surgery and medicine and possession of communicative and leadership qualities.

Recipient:  Phillip Appleton (1999)

 

Pharmacia and Upjohn Large Animal Clinical Proficiency Award -- A $500 award and certificate is presented by the Pharmacia and Upjohn Company to a Year IV student judged by the large animal faculty to have demonstrated a great interest and enthusiasm in large animal medicine and surgery; professionalism through integrity, performance, appearance and team cooperation; communication skills with colleagues and clients; and the ability to manage large animal patients.

Recipient:  Phillip Appleton (1999)

 

American College of Veterinary Surgeons Proficiency Large Animal Award -- The American College of Veterinary Surgeons presents a certificate to a Year IV student who has demonstrated academic and clinical proficiency in large animal surgery.

Recipient:  Robert Jones (1999)

 

Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association/American Association of Equine Practitioners Foundation Scholarship -- A $1,500 scholarship is presented to an entering third-year veterinary student who is a member in good standing of the AAEP student chapter and has demonstrated outstanding scholastic abilities and commitment to the AAEP and to the pursuit of equine practice.

Recipient:  Jill Baillie (2000)

 

LSU Equine Fund Scholarship -- A scholarship is awarded annually to a student who has demonstrated an interest in the equine species and has participated in activities related to the equine industry.  Selection is based also on academic ability, citizenship, and financial need.

Recipients:  LeeAnn Curtis (2002), Britta Leise (2002)

 

Student Chapter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners Awards are presented to students in Years I-III based on their participation in SCAAEP, financial need, and scholarship.

Recipients:  Jill Baillie (2000), Allison Steele (2000), Ashley Holm (2001), Callie Stanley (2001).

 

Phi Zeta Research Awards

Best Poster Presentation First Place

Ashley Holm (2001) for AS Holm, CS Venugopal, EP Holmes, CE Koch, RM Moore:  Inhibition of endothelin-1 (ET-1) induced contraction of equine colonic vessels by potential ET-1 receptor antagonists.

 

Best Poster Presentation Second Place

Dr. Lais Costa for LRR Costa, TL Seahorn, RM Moore, HW Taylor, SD Gaunt, RE Beadle:  Correlation of clinical score, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid cytology, and pulmonary histology in horses with summer pasture-associated obstructive pulmonary disease.

 

Best Oral Presentation First Place

Ashley Holm (2001) for AS Holm AS, CS Venugopal, CE Koch, EP Holmes, G Hosgood, SC Eades, RM Moore:  Comparison of two endothelin antagonists on in vitro responses of equine palmar digital arterial and venous rings to endothelin-1.

 

Best Oral Presentation Second Place

Dr. Joanne Tetens for J Tetens, SC Eades, G Hosgood, CE Koch, RM Moore:  Local colonic and systemic hemodynamic alterations during IV infusion of adenosine triphosphate-magnesium chloride in anesthetized horses. 

 

Young Investigator Award

The 17th Annual ACVIM Forum 1999, Chicago, Illinois, sponsored by Waltham, Area of Respiratory Disease.  Dr. Lais Costa for LRR Costa, TL Seahorn, RM Moore, HW Taylor, SD Gaunt, RE Beadle: Correlation of Clinical Score, Bronchoalveolar Lavage Fluid Cytology, and Pulmonary Histology in Horses with Summer Pasture-Associated Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
