EQUUS 21 -- Full Stride into the 21st Century

On November 6, 1999, leading representatives from numerous facets of the equine industry and prominent equine veterinarians from all parts of Louisiana met at the School of Veterinary Medicine to discuss future development of the LSU equine clinical and research programs.

After a brief overview of the history and many achievements of the equine program, the group took an in-depth tour of the clinical and research facilities, highlighting the clinical capabilities of LSU as an equine referral center for advanced veterinary care and the broad range of investigative activity in the Equine Health Studies Program.  Then the group convened over lunch to discuss future directions.  LSU’s equine program has made massive contributions to the health and welfare of horses in our state and is currently poised to become a pre-eminent equine center in the U.S.  Many positive suggestions for communicating our mission and achievements were raised.

As a result of this gathering a sound business plan has been developed based on the goals and objectives of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine Equine Health Studies Program and our message will be conveyed clearly, coherently, and frequently to you, the constituents we serve.  We hope you will, in turn, communicate to us how we might better serve your needs.  Equus 21 is underway!!

At the Equus 21 gathering, Ms. Saundra Lane Garrett was recognized for her family’s remarkable leadership donation of $50,000 in support of the construction of the new Equine Intensive Care Unit at the School of Veterinary Medicine.  The planned 10-stall ICU will replace the current two-stall facility which has gradually become less suitable with the recent dramatic increase in the number of critically ill and injured horses requiring ever more complex treatment at LSU.

John and Saundra Lane Garrett and Gerry and Faye Lane have a great love of horses and are long-time supporters of horse activities in Louisiana.  They provide major support for the PRCA sanctioned Clinton Rodeo and the world famous Angola Prison Rodeo.  In announcing the gift, Dr. David Senior, Head of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, praised the Lane family for their vision and thanked them for their extreme generosity.
